Yes, everything. Including my Monday reading check in. And I just realized I haven’t put up the October link up for Diversity on the Shelf. I’ll get to that tomorrow perhaps. Right now, I’m trying to squeeze this post in before exhaustion completely overtakes me.
I’m tired is what I’m saying. And there’s a hurricane coming so I went to the store today to get supplies. Because, of course, there are huge holes in my hurricane preparedness. But on the plus side, my parents loaned me a flashlight, so if both my and my daughter’s phones die, at least we’ll be able to see.
I finished one book last week:
Bring on the Blessings by Beverly Jenkins

Ok, so I read the most recent book in the series (Stepping to a New Day: A Blessings Novel Book 7) without knowing it was part of a series, so it was an interesting experience going back to see how it all started. I won’t put spoilers for book 7, but seeing how much some of the characters have changed (or not) since the beginning was a lot of fun.
This is great comfort reading. Lots of emphasis on love (family and community) and a huge focus on doing the right thing. The only thing I wasn’t that pleased about was the deus ex machina at the end, but, you know, this is fluff, so I just went with it.
I really want Bernadine to adopt me, especially since I don’t qualify for her Bottom Women’s Society. And also because she is a badass.
I started one new book: Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty.
Someone (a coworker? probably) asked me what the book is about, and I honestly have no clue. I just picked it up because I liked the last two books by Liane Moriarty that I read. I am finding, though, that her books tend to follow this pattern of being confusing in the beginning–so much so that I can never really get a handle on the characters until maybe a quarter of the way through. That may be what’s happening here, or it may just be that I have only been able to read in super short bursts because I’m reading it on my “lunch break” while I’m at work. (I shouldn’t be so sarcastic about the lunch break. The truth is I spend most of it talking to colleagues instead of reading, but still. I’m usually decompressing from teaching so my brain is total mush. Also, we have no designated breaks: I have carved one out for myself, hence the quotes.)
I also have a ton of awesome books on my bookshelf that I may or may not be able to get to before they’re due back at the library:
Will that stop me from putting more books on hold at the library? Of course not.
Which reminds me–I forgot to pick up an ILL that came in for me today. Great. I hope the library is open tomorrow (some offices are closed because of Hurricane Matthew. I can’t remember if that includes the library). Anyway, if it’s open, I’ll pop in after work to pick that one up.

Hoping that it doesn’t come to using a flashlight to see your dead phone, but at least you’re prepared. 😉 I’ve only read What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty. I liked it, but not enough I guess to read more books by her. Time to re-examine that decision and pick up another one of hers!

That’s one of her earlier books, right? The first of hers I read was The Husband’s Secret (book club pick), and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I like her character work.

Oh dear, sending good thoughts for the hurricane! My parents put a ten-year moratorium on Louisiana hurricanes in 2008, so I’ve been feeling super guilty about all the hurricanes that are hitting other places on the coast. I hope everyone’s okay and that it’s all a tempest in a teapot! (The majority of hurricane prospects when I was a girl were tempests in teapots, so that’s always what I hope for.) You know the thing about setting up mirrors? Shine your flashlight in one and set up other ones around the room to maximize the light you get?

A ten-year moratorium is fair, I think. I’m pretty sure that’s what happened in FL after Andrew since they (the news guys) keep talking about how it’s been so long since FL has dealt with a storm of this magnitude. For us, right now it’s a tempest in a teapot. It’s not looking so good for the coastal towns. 😦
