It’s Monday & last week is a total blur

I genuinely have no idea what I did this past week. Seriously. I looked at my calendar and everything, and I have zero clue what I did. Probably because all I did was grade.

I don't drink, so this really must be the only explanation. (source)

Anyway, I posted a thing last week: A Practice of Gratitude: Three Things Thursday.

And I started a couple of books I probably won’t finish:

Truly Madly GuiltyTruly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty

10/15/16: I’m at 34% and this is due back at the library, and I know I won’t finish it in time, which is just as well because, omg, this book’s plotting is getting on my last nerve. Yes, flashbacks between the present and the past are kind of LM’s jam, but, seriously, just show what happened at the barbecue that has severely damaged these people so I can get on with knowing how to properly react to their reactions!

The character work here (so far) is stellar as usual, and I love, love, love that we get to see just how all of these characters see and understand each other (especially Erika and Clementine), but seriously. I wish LM would just get on with it.

I admit that I might be in a mood, but still.

Wonder Woman at Super Hero High (DC Super Hero Girls)Wonder Woman at Super Hero High by Lisa Yee

10/16/16 @ 54%: This went from cute to twee real fast. Also, I don’t understand why Wonder Woman needs a nickname for Wonder Woman when her actual real name is Diana, which is never referenced in the story (so far). Just…why? Why? WHY?

Currently, I’m reading:

Last Night I Sang to the Monster

So, the only reason I started Wonder Woman at Super Hero High is that Last Night I Sang to the Monster by Benjamin Alire Sáenz is so sad, and I needed something light to break up the reading. Don’t get me wrong: I really am digging the book. The subject matter is just heavy. (It’s about a boy in rehab for alcohol addiction who doesn’t remember how he got there.)

I also watched some TV:

So I tried out Insecure (HBO) and American Housewife (ABC), and I am giving them both one more episode before I decide definitively if I’m giving them up.

Insecure was crass in a way that I was not expecting. Also, the two main characters are best friends who called each other “bitch” all the time in the premiere, and I hate hate hate hate HATE when women do that. So I’m willing to give it one more go to see if some of that stuff is toned down.

American Housewife was equally annoying because all the main character talked about is how fat she is (which makes sense given the original title for the show was Fattest Housewife). It got old fast. However, given the title change and the fact that it was the pilot, I’ll give it one more ep to see if that is toned down.

Happy reading, everyone!

    1. It’s a form of address. E.g., “Bitch, let’s get out of here” or “Uh uh, bitch, that’s not what happened.” How about “No, bitch, you’re riding shotgun tonight”? Etc.

  1. I’ve not heard of these 2 TV shows. I agree about the name-calling “bitch” trope. It’s not funny, nor necessary if the writing is sharp and the characters are good, then why use it? I figure there are so many TV shows anymore that if one doesn’t grab me quickly, I’m onto the next one.

Right now I’m watching Jane The Virgin, which is cute but seems more like it should be a movie than a TV series. And I’m kind of hooked on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend which is pretty whacked, but when they do their musical numbers I can’t stop laughing.

    1. My daughter told me to stop forcing myself to watch the shows. She is wise like you!

I do know people who talk like that in real life, so I get using it to be authentic, but I hate it so I don’t need that level of realism (and I don’t hang around women who do that).

I love Jane the Virgin, but my TV fatigue prevents me from really digging into one-hour shows, which is the great tragedy of my life. (This is also why I haven’t been able to get past the first episode of My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.)

  2. I’ve watched both episodes of Insecure and I like it so far. I can totally understand if it’s not your kind of show though.
To me, the relationship between Issa and Molly seems authentic. From what I’ve seen on Twitter reactions, this show has resonated with many Black women. I don’t mind the crassness. I’ll continue watching it because I like the humor. 😀

    1. Yeah, I think if I were younger that stuff wouldn’t bother me as much, but I’m an old now, so I’m not interested in those specific types of interactions. The second episode was much better about it (and I liked the humor more), so I’m going to keep watching for now.
