Diversity on the Shelf 2016: Wrap Up Post & Link-Up

How did everyone do on the challenge? Did you meet or exceed your goal? Did you get really, really close?

Diversity on the Shelf 2016

As a reminder the five levels were:

  • 1st Shelf: Read 1-6 books
  • 2nd Shelf: Read 7 -12 books
  • 3rd Shelf: Read 13 – 18 books
  • 4th Shelf: Read 19 -24 books
  • 5th Shelf: Read 25+ books

I knew I had signed up to do 5th shelf (and read way more than 25 books), but I had forgotten that I said I wanted all of those books that I counted for the challenge to be by people of color. That means I had to go in and add a separate Goodreads shelf solely dedicated to books by POC that I read this year. As of today (Dec. 21), on the list with all books by and about POC, I have 47 books, and on the list strictly dedicated to those books by POC, I have 30 books, so I’d say I did all right.

Also, I said I wanted at least 50% of my books to be by or about POC and with 47/87 (again, as of Dec. 21), I have met that goal (that’s 54% for those of you not wanting to do math along at home).

Here’s where I would normally post that cute little button for the link up, but my inlinkz subscription ended, so we are going OLD SCHOOL for the wrap-up here. You can either post a comment here to tell me whether or not you met or exceeded your stated goal (here’s a link to the sign up post if you posted your goal in those comments and need a refresher) along with a link to your completed shelf OR comment with a link to your wrap up post by 11:59 p.m. EST on Jan. 1, 2017.

I’ll draw someone at random to pick a book of their choice (up to $15) from the Book Depository. In order to win the drawing, you must have signed up for the challenge in the original link up and you must post a link to either your completed shelf or a wrap up post in the comments to this post.

  1. Congratulations on finishing this challenge! And for hosting it 🙂 I was just looking at my numbers for the year and I’m pretty close to 50% on POC authors as well for the year, which makes me happy. I think at this point, it comes quite naturally to me, which is awesome. But I still like to keep track through the year because I know publicity, etc., still skews white male.

  2. I way let myself off easy on this one, choosing only first shelf for the year but I ended up reading 11 books. Still too low and I’m hoping to do better in 2017. I hope you’ll host it again!

  3. I scheduled my wrap-up post to go live tomorrow, by which time I will have finished my current book and met my goal of 60 books by authors of color this year – a little over 23% of my total reading. I hope to keep going in 2017. Thank you so much for hosting and helping me stay focused!
