“As my colleague Yoni Appelbaum pointed out on Tuesday, citing the work of the Yale history professor Joanne Freeman, it was, in the United States’s antebellum years, typical for violence—duels, even—to attend almost every session of Congress. The telegraph, and its attendant ability to send information to far-flung places, almost instantly, changed that.” — The more things change, etc: ‘Nevertheless, She Persisted’ and the Age of the Weaponized Meme

“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a young wizard in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wand.” — This is pretty amazing: If “Harry Potter” Were Written By Other Famous Authors
“This is the Batman movie that needed to get made ever since 1989, when the character became aggressively PG-13. This is a Batman for kids that still captures everything that adults love about Batman too.” — Overthinking It has declared Lego Batman the best Batman (…and now I’m going to have to make sure to see it)
“I mourned for the kid I thought I was getting, but I got a totally upgraded version,” Jen said. — A girl and her glitter-shooting prosthetic
“The fact that the entertainment industry is not necessarily inclusive of the African-American experience is a similar form of neglect and is a symptom of a deeper problem. I wanted to make a film that acknowledges neglect and inaction in the face of the real race monster. In the process, I wanted to give a horror movie to everyone, but really to black audiences, who are loyal horror fans. We watch movies, screaming, “Get out!” in dark rooms at this screen that we cannot affect. It’s a symbol for that, which stops us from action.” — Jordan Peele on a Truly Terrifying Monster: Racism (This is a FANTASTIC interview, and I am now intrigued enough to consider maybe seeing Get Out even though I am a wimp and hate horror movies.)
“Many artists and storytellers do live with mental illness. But many don’t. And what I want to say today I guess is that you can be sane and be an artist, and also that if you are sick, getting help — although it is hard and exhausting and inexcusably difficult to access — will not make you less of an artist.” — John Green on mental illness and creativity

“Fences is what black cinema looks like when it’s being done by people who have mastered the craft of moviemaking behind and in front of the camera, and it has no interest in catering to white gaze.” // “Davis had to sell every inch of film she’s on, and she nails it, hangs it on the wall, and charges everybody admission to come see her new piece, ‘Making Denzel Washington invisible.’” — A quick review of Fences: You’re already late. GO.
“POC is a term with great power for non-indigenous (though some Indigenous people do identify as POC; many do not because of the settler colonialism issue), nonwhite people. We rally around it in acknowledging our common fight against white supremacy. However, it can also be misused in ways that harm the cause of anti-racism.” — On Carve the Mark: Asians Overstepping and the Misuse of “POC” as a Label

Hahahaa, I tried to get my sister to come see Get Out with me because I’ve seen so many amazing reviews of it, and she said it was too scary just from the trailer, and then I discovered that it was too scary for me also. Maybe when it shows up on streaming? That seems less scary than a darkened movie theater.

I heard it was more psychological thriller than actual horror, but now you have me reconsidering that. Also, I am weird because I didn’t find Scream or I Know What You Did Last Summer scary so I don’t even understand my own threshold, basically.
