It’s Monday & I just got back from the premiere of #PsychtheMovie

1. It is so good, y’all. So so good. I can’t wait for everyone to see it on Thursday. It’s super funny and just a delight (of course). Also, Maggie Lawson is a badass and I freaking love Juliet. (I feel a Juliet appreciation post coming on.) In conclusion, the movie did not disappoint at all.

The premiere event was fun. I got a trivia question right (“Who gave the Blueberry its name?”) so won some swag. And it was just so awesome to sit in a room full of fans who were all excited about seeing those two goofballs on screen.

2. While I was waiting in line, I finished a book:

Turtles All the Way Down by John Green

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I really liked this. As the mother of a child who has anxiety, a lot of the stuff Aza said sounded very familiar. I will also say that I got a real sense of Aza’s OCD and just how trapped by her thoughts she was. That was very well done. I also appreciated that this was a lot less precious than some of John Green’s more recent novels and that the love interest was actually a pretty down to earth kid.

I *loved* Daisy, and I loved her relationship with Aza. And their fight was just…oof. But I just really appreciated that she loved Aza so fully, even if Aza was too in her head to see/appreciate it.

My biggest issue with the book is the mom. She felt more not there than there, and I never got a really good sense of her character besides math teacher who sometimes worries about her kid.

Oh and that fanfic was hyphenated (so “fan-fiction”). I have never seen it written that way and found it completely distracting.

Also, this quote speaks to my soul: “My whole life I thought I was the star of an overly earnest romantic movie, and it turns out I was in a goddamned buddy comedy all along.”

3. I also started a book while I was in line for the showing:

The Afterlife of Holly Chase by Cynthia Hand is a retelling of A Christmas Carol.

And I started this audiobook on Saturday.

Mr. Loverman by Bernardine Evaristo is about a 74-year-old man who has a wife, Carmel, but has been involved with a man (the love of his life) for pretty much the entirety of their marriage. This is good so far, but sad.

I much prefer the hardback cover, btw.

Today’s topic is This Is How We Read #AMonthofFaves– eg. Number of books read so far, genre you read the most from, picture of favorite (or most often used) reading location, most read author, % eBooks, hardcovers, paperbacks and/or audiobooks, hint at what your favorite read of the year is (let us guess), types of books you wish you read more of, month you read the most and least).

As usual, I’ll just start with this right here:

Yep, that’s right: I’m 15 books behind on m Goodreads challenge with 54/75 books read. I’ll also tell you right now that 7 of those are books I didn’t finish, so I’m technically really 22 books behind.

I am okay with being behind because I, you know, had an unexpected cross-country move. So.

This year, I finally got smart and created a tag for months over on Goodreads so I could see at a glance how many books I read each month. April, July, and August were my slowest months (3 books, not sure if any of those were abandoned). I somehow managed to read 10 books in May (probably because school was out).

My reading has felt very ho hum, but I know I’ve read several books that I have liked a lot. I’m sure my feelings about reading will turn around in December, once the semester is out.

6. Oh, I almost forgot! On Saturday, I went to my first Mocha Girls Read book club meeting. It was so awesome, and I’m so glad I went. The book was The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, and the discussion was awesome. I also got the chance to meet Alysia, the founder of the book club AND someone I have known online through book blogging for about three years. In fact, I knew about the book club because of her blog, so I got to meet an online friend AND join a book club all on the same day.

There was also a cookie exchange (it is December), and I may have eaten too many cookies because I totally had a sugar/cookie hangover the next day.

7. Tomorrow is the English division (not department) Christmas party. My sweater might be slightly inappropriate, but we shall see.
