Okay, I wasn’t sure what I was going to pick for this day, but Naima said the black part of Black Music Month is relaxed today, and our choice could be/include a genre people may be surprised we’re into, etc. That made it easier for me to come up with my answer.
I love pop as well as R&B/hip-hop, so I don’t think the fact that I love any pop crossover songs (no matter the genre) would be all that shocking. If a song is that big, I’ve probably heard it and enjoyed it. Power rock ballads and all of that are things that are on my radar and will be named without hesitation as songs I dig.
However, there is a song I do like that’s so sonically different from most of anything I listen to that I’m surprised I like it. That song is Fiona Apple’s “Extraordinary Machine.”
I think I first listened to her album because someone (or someones) on LiveJournal kept saying how much they loved it, and since the library is a thing that exists and I was open, I tried it out. I don’t remember any other song from the album except this one, and I’m still not even sure I fully understand it, but the chorus obviously speaks deep to my soul.
Be nice to me / or treat me mean / I’ll make the most of it / I’m an extraordinary machine
I dig it.
I really enjoyed that song and the artist. Thank you for introducing it to me, Akilah!
