Hi. It is time.

And just as a heads up, this post is very image heavy. Descriptions are below each picture. Also, these aren’t necessarily in date order because I grouped similar things together.

U is for Undergoing the Natural Hair Journey #AtoZChallenge

Today’s topic was given to me by my friend, TNT, who shared that she’s been natural almost 20 years, which reminded me that it’s been almost 20 years for me, too. When I told her that, she asked, “What’s your hair story?”

I got my first relaxer when I was 9 or 10, and I remember the stylist marveling that it was “bone straight.” And so it went until after I went to college and especially after I had my daughter. Then, I started waiting longer and longer between touch ups. I waffled quite a while between making the big chop and transitioning while wearing extensions.

Me being me and because this was before the natural hair care explosion on the internet, I used Let’s Talk Hair by Pamela Farrell and Good Hair by Lonnice Brittenum Bonner as my guides. (I found them by, of course, going to the library.)

I am a genius #sol17

Today I discovered that the conditioner I have been using for months (MONTHS!) is actually shampoo.

Shampoo.

How did I discover this?

Well, I was trying to show my daughter how to take down her hair, and I mentioned that conditioner would help to give it better “slip” as the hair peeps call it. “So, take a little of this conditioner,” I said, “and put it on the ends of your hair.”

To which she said, “Yeah, except that’s shampoo.”

And I looked at the label, and it definitely says shampoo.

You know, I had always wondered why my conditioner created lather. And it never once occurred to me to check the label.
