1. Best Book You Read In 2018?

The Mother of Black Hollywood: A MemoirThe Mother of Black Hollywood: A Memoir by Jenifer Lewis

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I listened to the audio version of this, which I highly recommend. It’s like sitting in a room with her while she tells you her story. Plus, she sings! So that’s fun.

I appreciated Lewis’s honesty here, especially as she spoke of her sex addiction and bipolar disorder. I *loved* all the stuff about how she came to terms with her childhood and how she learned to forgive her mother. The story about the white man coming to the door and insulting her mother? WHEW.

Lewis makes liberal use of the f-word and isn’t shy about detailing her sexual history (there’s a chapter called “Dick Diva,” for example). If these are things that may offend you, probably don’t read this. But if you want a brutally honest account of working in show business while learning to accept and manage a mental illness, then definitely check it out.

Also, I totally want to hang out with Jenifer Lewis and Brandy. How do I make this happen?

#AMonthofFaves This Is How I Read & Blog

amonthoffaves2

#AMonthofFaves This Is How We Read and Blogged This Year – eg. Number of books read so far, genre you read the most from, picture of favorite (or most often used) reading location, most read author, % eBooks, hardcovers, paperbacks and/or audiobooks, hint at what your favorite read of the year is (let us guess), types of books you wish you read more of, month you read the most and least). Plus tell us how you blogged – most popular blog posts, you faves, did you try anything new on your blog this year, did you make blogging goals – how did you do, essential programs, apps, plugins, websites and / or your blogging routine, blogs on blogging that you follow, blog tips you learned and used this year.

Okay, this year I kept better track of how many books I read per month so here are those totals:

  • January – 8
  • February – 10
  • March – 7
  • April – 3
  • May – 2
  • June – 5
  • July – 8
  • August – 6
  • September – 5
  • October – 5
  • November – 5
  • December – 9 (so far–I plan to finish at least one more)

I started but didn’t finish 12 throughout the year. Some of them I got farther into than others, of course.

This was the year of MoviePass (*pours one out*) and then my daughter had a job at the movie theater this summer so I actually saw a bunch of movies!

Movies I Loved

  • The Incredibles 2

It’s Monday! What are you reading? on an actual Monday! + #AMonthofFaves

Wow, so much happened in the past week that I don’t know where to begin.

1. The big thing is that the semester ended! I gave final exams, I graded graded graded and then graded some more.

end of semester bingo

My friend sent me the end of semester bingo card from social media, and I asked her if every square could be “Grading until you cry” and “more grading.” Because that was my main mood.

Oh, and also this:

#AMonthofFaves: What Worked and Didn’t This Year

amonthoffaves2

Today’s prompt:

#AMonthofFaves Routines, Habits and Changes. What Worked this Year and/or What Didn’t. What habits, routines or rituals worked for you this year – either something you kept doing – or something new that you started? What did you try that didn’t work … or what did you used to do that no longer works for you?

Okay, I wanted to make this a teaching reflection, but I am still grading my students’ reflections so haven’t gathered enough evidence on that yet, so that will come later. In the meantime, here are some things that worked and didn’t for me this year:

1. I found a gym that offers water aerobics classes and, since this summer, have been going twice a week. That’s not enough but it’s better than the once a week at the beginning of the year. The summer break was a godsend because I discovered that the morning water aerobics classes are where it’s at, so this semester, I’ve been getting up on Friday and going along with my regular Tuesday night class. For the past two weeks, I’ve been forcing myself to go to the Thursday night class I don’t like all that much so I can get in three days of gym time. This has tremendously helped my mood as I’m sure you can guess.

#AMonthofFaves: A Day (or Weekend) in the Life of Yours Truly

amonthoffaves2

Today’s prompt:

MON. Dec. 10 – A Day (or Weekend) in the Life. What did you do on Saturday, December 8th … or that weekend – December 8-9. Let’s take a peek into each others lives as as we chronicle what we all did on that day (or during the weekend).

It’ll be weekend for me!

December 8

3:30 a.m. – Wake up because I fell asleep at 6:45 p.m. after getting home from the gym. Eat food, futz around online (which includes trying to figure out why a book I know I rated on Goodreads doesn’t have a rating and why another book is showing up as having been read twice when I only read it once).

4:31 a.m. – Heat up some tea, read a little bit

5 a.m. – Have a lie down so I can get up at a reasonable hour and face the actual day

7:22 a.m. – Wake up for realsies, meditate, fool around on Facebook

8 a.m. – Get out of bed, shower, eat, etc.

9:45 a.m. – Head to my support group, run errands, eat some food, futz around online (this will happen a lot)

2 p.m. – Grade papers

2:10 p.m. – Slight grading crisis, phone a friend

#AMonthofFaves: 5 Popular Books Worth the Hype (and a few that weren’t)

Today’s prompt is books that lived up to the hype! Or, you know, not.

Books that Lived Up to the Hype

A Man Called OveA Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is compulsively readable with great characters, but there is a LOT of suicidal ideation in this book.
