It’s the end of the month as we know it so here are some book reviews

Okay, technically, I am writing this post on April 30, but it will post on May 1, so you know what that means.

Too much has happened since my last post to do any of it justice, so the most important things to note are that:

  1. The LA Times Festival of Books was last weekend! It’s always a good time to meet authors and listen to them talk about their books. And, of course, to get up to shenanigans with my friends.
  2. It’s finals week.

So I’m just going to do a round up of the rest of the books I’ve finished this past month since there is so much to do–especially since I am basically leaving town the day finals end.

C is for Corona Princess Diaries #AtoZChallenge

Living queen emoji Meg Cabot has decided to bless us with Corona Princess Diaries. That’s right: completely free updates of The Princess Diaries in which Meg Cabot shows us how Princess Mia is handling the global pandemic.

If you have never read The Princess Diaries before, this is an excellent introduction, though it does spoil the (obvious) ending of the book series and also has mild spoilers for the Middle School Princess series. You can read this to get a sense of Cabot’s writing style and humor and why I love her with my whole heart. (Also, of course, you can get a sense of just how different the book series is from the movies.)

Here’s an excerpt from Day 3, which made me laugh out loud:

It’s Monday, and I’ve read some books since the beginning of the year

This is strictly a reading update!

Giant Days, Vol. 5 (Giant Days, #5)Giant Days, Vol. 5 by John Allison

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was so fun. A plagiarism plot, a mean professor, Susan being a stalker, Esther dabbling in pens, Daisy being the all-around best, and a trip to Ikea. Did I mention Daisy is the best? I love her. I mean, they’re all pretty great IN GENERAL, but specifically in this volume Daisy is the best.

It’s Monday & Tropical Storm Colin is ruining my plans

I should be at the gym is what I’m saying. But no. Bands of rain with squall lines are coming through. RUDE.

This past week, I read:

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the UniverseAristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

3.5 stars, rounding up

Great characters, EXCELLENT ending. Also, Lin-Manuel Miranda is an A+ narrator. Will review on the blog.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I. Love. Grandmère.

That is all.

Kill the Boy BandKill the Boy Band by Goldy Moldavsky
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

I made it about 1/3 of the way through this book and just could not bring myself to pick it back up again.

I find all of the characters grossly offensive and problematic on pretty much every level. If the author was aiming for satire, she missed. By a lot.

As of today, I’m reading:

Dear Bill, Remember Me? by Norma Fox Mazer

I am still making my way through my library book sale finds, so I started Dear Bill, Remember Me? and Other Stories by Norma Fox Mazer last night. It’s a definite palate cleanser after Kill the Boy Band.

I’m currently listening to some podcasts so my audiobook adventures are on hold for now. However, I’m going to have to start packing soon (as in, I should have started yesterday), so I should really get on finding my next read.
