Okay, I did it. I signed up for my fourth (4th!) year participating in the daily Slice of Life challenge hosted by Two Writing Teachers. For today’s post, I’m taking a page out of Jessica’s blog and doing a then and now from the first two times I participated in the challenge (2017 & 2018) and, well, now.
I have to admit I was shocked (shocked!) to see how brief my first intro post was, especially considering the fact that my first post for the challenge last year was…not brief. So, copy/paste from the original in plain text. My updates in bold.
- I teach English at a community college (2017) / I still teach English at a community college, but now I’m doing it on the West Coast instead of the East Coast. (2018) – Still at the latter school. At the previous school, I taught comp, writing about lit (comp II) / research writing, and fiction writing. At my current institution, I teach comp I and II, writing about lit, children’s literature, mystery fiction, intro to creative writing, and short story writing.
- I have a daughter who will soon be 18 (2017) – My daughter will soon be 26.
- I bought my first house this past summer (2017) / I sold my first house this past summer and am back to apartment living (2018) – I now live in an ADU (additional dwelling unit) so have a mini-house. I’m still renting.
- I love to read and firmly believe there is ALWAYS time to read – This has not changed.
- My current must watch TV shows are The Good Place, One Day at a Time, Insecure, Jane the Virgin, Kevin (Probably) Saves the World, and Jeopardy! (2018) – Ah, how streaming has changed things. If there were no such thing as streaming/TiVo, I would be home in time to watch Traitors (we’re only on the third episode of the current season, so we’re so far behind) and Abbott Elementary. Probably also Matlock if I wasn’t behind on that either because I do actually care and want to watch it but also I keep waiting for my daughter so we can watch it together, and our schedules have not been compatible lately.
- One of my favorite authors is Meg Cabot (2017) – This has not changed.
- I am allergic to mangoes – Neither has this unfortunately.
- In the past two years, I have developed an intolerance to chocolate and onions (2017) / I discovered my intolerance to onions and chocolate may be because of IBS *and* that I may be able to reintroduce one or both back into my diet because I am currently doing the low FODMAP elimination diet (2018) This has changed. Turns out my intolerance and IBS are mostly depression-related. Huzzah!-ish. The ish is because obviously depression sucks. The huzzah is that now that the depression is being treated, my appetite and bowels have mostly returned to normal. I don’t eat onions as much as I used to, but they don’t destroy my life if I have them, so that’s good.
- I should be grading – I actually hit my grading goal for tonight. I am still woefully behind, but I, at least for today, am not thinking that. Now, what I should be doing is writing but anyone who has read my blog before knows how I feel about productive procrastination, so.
- My new school has a winter session, which means my winter break was about ten weeks long and that I’m on the second week of spring semester. This time last year I was getting ready for spring break (2018) – Sort of the same. My school eliminated the winter session for about two years, but now it’s back. On the plus side, I was able to get out of town during the aftermath of the LA fires in January. On the minus side, I’ll be in school until mid-June (WHICH I HATE). Also, this time last year I was on sabbatical.
- This is the first time I have ever lived by myself, and I am almost 40 years old (2018) – My daughter graduated college so that season is over.
- I am so excited about the A Wrinkle in Time movie that I assigned the book to my students (2018) – We’re doing adaptations in my comp and writing about lit classes, so I assigned Aminah Mae Safi’s Travelers Along the Way.
And that’s a snapshot of me, today. Tomorrow (today, technically, since this will post after midnight) is book club. For the rest of my slices I am either going to (a) focus on moments that brought me joy for the day or (b) possibly try Kim’s thirty minutes per day idea, which sounds pretty cool. Happy slicing, everyone!

That is a interesting post. To think and write about the past and now. Regards, Lakshmi
I’m
So glad this formal resonated with you. A great way for a quick catch up! Glad you’re here!
I liked the format you used today. (I might use that another day, as I already wrote mine for today…) it’s amazing how much things can change in 4 years!
This is a clever compare/contrast format. I can see students using the format. I’m not sure how long I’ve participated in the SOL challenge. I changed blogging platforms a few years ago so am not sure I could figure it out. I honed in on your TV show list. I find myself liking Matlock more than I thought I would, but my favorite show right now is The Pitt on Maxx. Anyway, glad you’re here. You’re doing the lord’s work teaching community college. I kind of wish I had transitioned to two-year college before retiring. Do come join Kim’s challenge. I have the time frames if you need them, and I have access to your email. Let me know.
Yes, please!
Haha it’s funny because I was just telling my students how kindergarten and middle school teachers do the Lord’s work. I love how we all have an age that’s outside of our scope.
This is a fun way for us to get to know you a bit and also to see into the past a bit. I too enjoyed The Good Place, but came to it later than you. I’m glad you’re figuring out the chocolate and onions. Those are two things I would miss for sure. And, yeah, depression definitely sucks. Glad you’re navigating it. Enjoy slicing.
I’m not sure if I’ve commented on your posts before so this was great to read, along with the updates. How life changes… so often in unexpected ways. I’m in Australia, so tend to watch very different shows and probably read different books. I don’t even know who Meg Cabot is, so will have to check her out! Happy slicing.
