It’s Tuesday & I’m on spring break! #sol17

March 7, 2017

Someone at church Sunday told me that I had a lightness about me. And I was like, “It’s because I’m on vacation.”

Slice of Life is a writing challenge hosted by Two Writing Teachers.

Ah, vacation. The time of no alarms and no calendar events. (This is a slight exaggeration since I have a church meeting this week.) But the only things on my calendar right now besides the church meeting are meet ups with friends. Ahhhhh.

Do you know what I did last night? Watched The Great British Baking Show. And it was glorious. Do you know what I did today? Watched The Great British Baking Show and (some of) One Day at a Time and (s0me of) Big Little Lies. You know what that was? Glorious!

I also rolled out of bed when I wanted to and went to the gym when I wanted to. I also ran some errands but that’s just because I can’t go ONE DAY without going to Publix, so whatever. I just roll with it.

Probably the most exciting thing I did was pay the deposit to secure my daughter’s enrollment at her chosen school. And I did that right before writing this post.

So, you know. It was nice to just ease into everything.

So, I’m doing the Slice of Life Challenge, which means I’ve posted some things:

I also finished a book:

ShortShort by Holly Goldberg Sloan

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

2.5 stars, rounding down.

I liked this book better when I started reading it than when it ended. After the middle, this book started to drag a lot for me, and I found myself forcing myself to see it through.

The big issue is that Julia has a great voice, but after a while it got tiresome–mostly because Julia spends most of the book in her head. Also, I realize this isn’t the story Sloan set out to tell, but I would have probably liked this a lot better if Julia had actually interacted with some kids her own age so I got to see her actually being a kid instead of the mini-adult she thought she was.

And I’m currently reading these:

Hidden Figures

I am almost done with the Hidden Figures audiobook. Almost done.

Parable of the Sower

And today while I was waiting for my daughter to finish up with an appointment, I started Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler. I haven’t gotten very far, but I am intrigued.

Ah, Spring Break – enjoy! (Still a few weeks away here.) You are the second person this week to mention “The Great British Baking Show” – guess I need to check it out.

I appreciate your candid remarks about Short. I just picked a copy up from the library and hope to get to it this week. Now I won’t have overly high expectations and will probably be impressed. Enjoy your time off!

Spring break? Spring break? We don’t need no stinkin’ Spring Break! Ok, actually, we are in DESPERATE need of it (and I’m insanely jealous!). I’m glad that yours is off to such a glorious start! :) Thank you for sharing with us!

“No alarms and no calendar events” – indeed! I’m always amazed by how vacations change the bell-driven pace of my typical work days. Enjoy your time off.

OMG, I’m loving your blogging life more and more. You’re the second person who’s told me about the Great British Bakeoff. I’m going to watch it. And I loved Big Little Lies the book. Should I watch? I need something to balance my This is Us TV consumption. I hope you have an amazing, well-deserved break!

    • Akilah

Yes! It’s very close to the original, and I am loving all of the actors and the way the material is handled.

  9. Myra GB

I just got my graphic novel adaptation of Butler’s Kindred – and looking forward to reading it. :)

    • Akilah

Have you read the original? I’m waffling on the graphic adaptation because I found the original so stunning.

I have to wait four more weeks for spring break. Waahh!
