W is for Work It #AtoZChallenge #PandemicAlphabet

Do you like any of the following:

  • movies starring dancing
  • teen comedies
  • dancing boys
  • dancing girls
  • training montages
  • dance-offs
  • smart girls
  • friendship
  • Michelle Buteau
  • Jordan Fisher
  • characters that are extra for no reason

Then have I got the movie for you.

Work It (Netflix) is perfect. Everything about it is perfect. It opens with a dance routine, there’s a dance-off in the school courtyard, and then there is more dancing. Did I mention there’s a lot of dancing? So much dancing!

The movie is about a girl who makes school her life so much so that the admissions counselor at her dream school tells her she’s basically too basic and boring to stand out because her extracurriculars are the same extracurriculars as all the other overachievers. So she lies and says she’s on the dance team, which she is not, but she gets the opportunity to try out. However, she doesn’t make the cut. So she does what any regular person would do and starts her own dance team full of misfits. Teen shenanigans ensue. And it all comes down to the big performance at the end, which we all knew it would.

The characters are fun and interesting, the plot while mildly predictable (will the misfit team make it into the final dance-off? I’m sure you can guess) is also still fun, and the romance works. (You knew there was a romance, right?) Even the tertiary characters get their due.

Anyway, this is all about best friends and dancing and kissing and it also made me smile the whole way through, and isn’t that all that we want right now?

For this year’s A to Z Challenge, I have decided that I’m going to focus on comfort reads/watches as we enter our second (!) April in the pandemic. Tune in tomorrow to see what I choose for X!
