Y is for You Should See Me in a Crown #AtoZChallenge #PandemicAlphabet

First of all, this cover.

you should see me in a crown by leah johnson

I mean, doesn’t it just scream cuteness and light? LOOKING AT IT MAKES ME HAPPY. So there’s that.

But if that’s not enough for you, there is the plot and the writing and the fun. So if you like any of these things…

  • romance
  • families
  • proms
  • friendship

…you should like the book.

Okay, so what is it about? Liz has all her hopes and dreams pegged on one school and one scholarship. She does not get the scholarship, so all of her hopes and dreams are crushed. BUT ALSO she goes to a super rich school that awards a pretty hefty scholarship to the prom king and queen so she does what any normal teen who hates the spotlight would do and enters the prom queen race. Also, she meets a girl so now there’s THAT whole thing because romance.

One thing I really liked about this book is tying real stakes to the prom king and queen thing. I never got the big deal about the desperate popularity contest of it all, mostly because at my high school the winners were chosen out of a hat. Also, who cares?

But! An actual campaign to be prom queen matters here! Because Liz, protagonist of our hearts, needs that money.

There’s a lot of good (GREAT) friendship stuff here: there’s Jordan her childhood friend who she is estranged from and then there’s big friction with her best friend Gabi. I am a sucker for this kind of stuff and love it more than romance usually so when I tell you that it’s good stuff, it’s good stuff.

THE POINT IS that the book is as cute and fun as that cover even though it does deal with some serious topics (Liz’s brother has sickle cell anemia, for one). So it’s not all sweetness and light but I did describe it in my Goodreads review as a “joy and a delight,” which means you can trust me when I say that this one provided me with some comfort during the pandemic and could do the same for you.

For this year’s A to Z Challenge, I have decided that I’m going to focus on comfort reads/watches as we enter our second (!) April in the pandemic. Tune in tomorrow to see what I choose for Z!
