Zoom Fail #SOL25

March 12, 2025

I looked up and it’s 11:40 pm, so this one is going to have to be a quickie.

I had a mostly great day yesterday. I got next week’s assignments posted for my classes (still far behind where I want to be), and I went to a writing workshop that was AWESOME and that I will blog about later.

Today–not so much. First, I had therapy, which is annoying because it’s therapy. I know some people love it, but I honestly don’t trust people who like therapy (#sorrynotsorry). Then, we had the guest speaker that I thought was coming at the end of this month but was today. Her talk went great, and the students were super into it, which is a world of yay. But I was also supposed to be Zoom-ing it, which is usually easy peasy. Except I was in a room I hadn’t been in before so was unfamiliar with the set up so we started late. Then, I screwed up the link so locked out my online students who were waiting to get into the event. And I also forgot to log into my Zoom account and make myself a host so I could manage all of the technical stuff while the speaker was speaking until she was about ten minutes into her presentation. So, you know. All of that.

But, like I said, the presentation was great, and the students dug it. I did manage to record the presentation so can share it with my online students that way, thankfully.

(Oh and last night I realized that I accidentally booked the late March speaker for the same day I’ll be at a conference so had to ask her to reschedule, gave her some dates, and she agreed to the preferred one. Yay! But I forgot to check if the space is available that day and IT IS NOT, so now I have to ask her to reschedule again. This semester can kick rocks.)

I did end on a good note, though. I went to visit a friend of mine who recently had surgery. She can’t walk so I asked if there was anything she wanted that she couldn’t get because it didn’t justify the delivery cost (like a Starbucks coffee). She requested a chocolate chip cookie. My plan was to get her one from the bakery down the street, but I was late leaving and then it started raining so I had to go change my shoes so was even later leaving. I got to the bakery two minutes before they closed and, miracle of miracles, the door was still unlocked. The display was empty, so I asked if they had cookies and they did. So I got my friend two. She was ecstatic, so I am very glad I was able to do something nice for her.

This is probably riddled with typos, so I apologize, but it’s 11:52 so I have to hit post on this bad boy to make the deadline for today.

Okay, I did give it a quick proofread so it’s now 11:54, so I really am hitting post.

Wait, forgot to give it a title. And now I’m hitting post.

Akilah, let me just say THANK YOU for giving me that validation in knowing that I’m not alone. How many days have I charged through the day, fully aware that I will need to Slice, even thinking about possible topics and ideas, only to have it circle back and kick me in the buttoxies right at the nth hour?

Sounds like the semester is doing a number on you. So yes, it can kick rocks. And it can even sit on a tack if it wants to.

You’re welcome! And I do so love buttoxies. Thank you for introducing me to that term 😀

What a day! I’m amazed you squeezed a slice in. I would have wanted to collapse in bed and quit. (Which is why I’m a morning slicer no matter WHAT. I had to leave for work at 6:15 yesterday morning, so I set my alarm for 4:30 to have time to slice! My husband thinks losing sleep for any reason is dumb, but I knew it wouldn’t get done later.) I could so relate to the Zoom fails. Zoom keeps logging me out so I join a calendar event that I myself scheduled and am host of–and I’m not the host. SIGH.

I’m barely cognizant of anything in the morning. If I try to write then, it would all be a bunch of jibber jabber. And that’s not even counting the pressure of procrastination.

ZOOM. When it works, it’s great. When it doesn’t, it’s a ruiner. A ruiner!
